Creating Safe Living Environments for Seniors

The constant battle of deciding whether your loved one is safe living alone can start to feel overwhelming, especially if they want to stay where they are. A flood of emotions come to mind like guilt and abandonment among many. I for one, know my grandparents want to stay in their home forever, who wouldn’t? But the reality is, that may not be an option if safety becomes a concern.

Before this happens, there are some routes you can take to alter the home like using a company called Home Modification Design LLC (HMD). They redesign the layout of the home, offering a safer environment for you or your loved one. We sat down with Sheri Wilson, owner of HMD who explained how they can help seniors in their own home.

Home Modification Design LLC

HMD is a home accessibility consulting business to serve clients and reach increased independence in their own home, with the goal of staying there for a lifetime.  The owner is Sheri Wilson who serves as a Registered Occupational Therapist for over 25 years. She has her certification of Certified Aging in Place with the NAHB, her Assistive Technology Professional certification through RESNA, and her Executive Certificate in Home Modification from USC.

Her business serves to make recommendations for seniors that have medical or physical changes, need fall prevention, aging in place, or just needing to make their home more accessible to themselves to be functional and safe. Their recommendations for modifications are unique due to the fact that we assess the client’s functional ability first and ask about the goals they would like to reach within their homes. We then make recommendations based off of our findings and not just use standardized modifications. For example, if a client only reaches a certain height or may be unable to balance themselves in sitting, adjustments or certain equipment will be recommended.

These recommendations are put into a full report for the client to make changes or modifications and can be used if a contractor is needed.  Please call Sheri at 407-417-6031 to schedule an appointment or visit our website at homemoddesign.com.
