National Skilled Nursing Care Week (NSNCW) falls on March 12th– May 19th and at North Star Senior Advisors, we are excited to celebrate and honor nursing centers as they assist not only our seniors but people with disabilities as well. While nursing centers are sometimes deemed as an institutionalized setting, there are several benefits to one’s health and well-being. Whether it is planting, playing a game, cooking, reading, relaxing, or listening to music, these centers help individuals improve quality of life the best way possible.

Created by the American Health Association (AHCA), NSNCW recognizes the vital role nurses and CNA’s play in caring for the elderly and disabled. This year’s theme is ‘Live Soulfully’ and will focus on celebrating skilled nursing centers by showing what they do to attain happy and healthy souls. While there are many similarities between nursing care centers and assisted living communities, there are notable differences. However, today we would like to offer some activity ideas that can be presented in both homes to help to stimulate the mind and body:

Gardening Activities

Enjoy fresh air outside while being in tune with nature. This is great for both nursing homes and senior living communities to participate in. Some have large outdoor areas where you can help plant and water flowers, herbs and even vegetables! You can invite friends and family to bring other plants in, as long as it is approved by management.

Food Tasting

Have the chef or activity director put on a delightful taste testing by hosting a Food Truck or inviting local caterers and chefs. This will bring tons of joy and can be provided in all sorts of ways. Residents and staff will find comfort in trying food they love while being able to interact with the other residents who come out to enjoy, test, taste and sample!

Pet Day

Some communities partner with a local shelter or organization to bring in pets to visit with their residents. Research shows that spending time with a furry loved one will lower heart rate, blood pressure and overall levels of stress. It can also prevent depression which will keep you healthy in the long run. If you do not already partner with a group that brings in animals, take some time to check one out. Your residents will not be disappointed!

Spa Day

Last but certainly not least, host a spa day with your residents! Help them to relax and de-stress by either offering manicures and massages or by hiring a luxury service to come in and create the ultimate spa day! Your residents will love this as they can enjoy by themselves or invite friends and family to experience together.
