November is dedicated to those friends and family members who care for their loved one and North Star Senior Advisors honors National Family Caregiver Month! Did you know that there are about 44 million Americans who are caregivers for a family member, friend or neighbor? November is dedicated to honoring all the hard work caregivers do and to let them know that they are never underappreciated.
Being a family caregiver can be a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week job. Often times, caregivers are responsible for balancing their work, marriage, and kids all at the same time as caring for their elderly loved one. Caregivers should never have to feel guilty if they believe that they need help with their family members. Sometimes caregivers just want to be a wife, daughter, or a son and not a caregiver. If that feeling becomes overwhelming maybe, it’s time to consider an assisted living facility (ALF) or Adult Daycare program.
Moreover, maybe the family caregiver is not ready to put their family member in an assisted living facility. Are there other resources that can help? Of course, there are. Keep in mind caregivers should always consider taking a break. So don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are many communities that offer respite care, which is short-term care, lasting anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. So, there is no need to feel guilty if the caregiver is needing a day to themselves or even a full week. Understand that limits can be reached and sometimes a change of atmosphere can go a long way. Always care for yourself first and know that your work is valuable. Caregivers can also locate a local support group to discuss their everyday concerns and stresses as well as meet others who are experiencing the same overwhelming feeling of guilt and resentment.
Just know that you are appreciated and thank you for all the hard work you do. If you’re an employed caregiver who works at a facility, home, or hospital, you are also not forgotten! You do an outstanding job helping people with their impossible tasks as well as brighten their day. Your care and a sweet smile can go a long way. This Month we can learn so much more about Caregivers at www.caregiver.org.
Happy National Family Caregiver Month!
