It’s National Assisted Living Week and we’d like to recognize our amazing assisted living partners who go above and beyond to keep their residents safe at all times. Yesterday, Hurricane Irma visited Florida and our assisted living partners worked tirelessly (24-72 hour shifts) to ensure residents were out of harm’s way. All managers and caregivers stayed in their communities with their resident’s while others worked hard to evacuate to safety.
How do these communities prepare for a hurricane? They plan and have a system in place. Everyone trains throughout the year and knows exactly what to do and when. North Star Senior Advisors is so proud of our assisted living partners for implementing their hurricane preparedness plan.
Florida law requires the facilities’ comprehensive emergency management plan include:
- Risk assessment and planning
- Policies and procedures
- Communication plan
- Training and testing
- Ensuring there is enough food in the event loss of power (a minimum of 72 hours worth of food for all residents)
If you’re considering Assisted Living for your loved one and are curious to know what to look for in the event of a hurricane, please ask the below questions:
1- Can I see the state approved Emergency Management Plan?
2- Will you have at least 72 hours worth of medications and food for my loved one?
3- Do you have an emergency generator in the event of a blackout OR if my loved one needs for their oxygen tank?
4- Can my family member be released to me in the event of an evacuation?
5- When would you consider evacuation?
6- In the event of an evacuation, who will notify me?
Hurricane Preparedness is vital for all senior living communities. Those State of Florida licensed communities have regulations to comply with. Please be cautious when working with unlicensed facilities.
North Star Senior Advisors only partners with those who are licensed through the state of Florida. Let’s recognize those who worked through this hurricane for National Assisted Living Week! Feel free to contact one of our senior living advisors to guide you with your search!
