Happy Thanksgiving!
November is National Diabetes Month which focuses attention on the growing cost of diabetes on American’s health. From the physical, emotional and social effects, diabetes impacts more than 30 million people in the United States. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it is so important to keep in mind diabetic-friendly meals.
One of the greatest things about Thanksgiving aside from spending time with family, is trying out the different dishes. Whether you cook a Turkey or Ham, this is the one holiday we all look forward to. Of course this makes things difficult if you are supposed to be watching what you eat! Plus, most of us look forward to the best part, dessert! However, the worry for many seniors living with Diabetes is not being able to enjoy Thanksgiving dessert. According to the Diabetes Association, 12 million seniors aged 65 and older are diagnosed or undiagnosed with Diabetes. That number is expected to grow each year. What this means is that several seniors must closely monitor their glucose and insulin levels to ensure their blood sugar remains normal versus high. Taking in large amounts of sugar can definitely cause more harm to the body than good. Controlling sugar intake can sometimes be a challenge, though, especially during a holiday where food is the main event. How can you turn away sweets when there are so many to try? It’s difficult for anyone to do that.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to infuse diabetes and thanksgiving- friendly desserts to consider this year! Instead of making a dish full of sugar that is already bad for the body, try something new and pick a dessert you won’t regret later on.
