What Typically Happens in Senior Living Communities During the Holidays?
North Star Senior Advisors, has the pleasure and opportunity to visit several of the top Central Florida senior living communities. Every facility’s culture and personality differ from one another and when the holidays arrive, various activities and celebrations come to life! On behalf of North Star Senior Advisors, we are pleased to share the above video of multiple communities participating in lively activities for their residents to enjoy.
Festive decorations are filled throughout the buildings along with Christmas trees, menorahs and decorations residents help create. Preparing crafts such as snowflakes as well as gingerbread houses and other holiday decorations are some of the many activities performed in a senior living community. Although fine dining occurs every day in assisted living facilities, chefs go above and beyond to help celebrate the holiday meals with turkey, ham, stuffing, a platter full of desserts and much much more!
Charity Events
Many charity events are also held at different facilities during the holidays. The 17th annual Festival of Wreaths event was held at the beginning of December at Arden Courts Memory Care. Wreaths were donated and individuals from all over were able to bid on their favorite wreath! All proceeds benefited the Alzheimer’s Association (Please make sure it is linked to http://www.alz.org). Families and residents attended and enjoyed delicious food and festivities! Parade of Trees is another event hosted this year by Excellence Assisted Living with a similar concept. Christmas Trees were decorated and auctioned off to resident families as well as healthcare community professionals. All proceeds went to Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Some Central Florida communities hold social happy hour on certain days as well. During this time, drinks, light snacks, and live entertainment are provided such as singers and guitar/piano players. Plantation Oaks Senior Living Community is known for their lively socials as singers come in and perform for the residents.
Students from local middle and high schools also visit with seniors and sing Christmas carols. It warms our hearts watching seniors rejoice and sing along to different songs.
Community Activities
Day and night outings are very popular as communities take their residents for a ride to local light shows, tree ceremonies, and plays or concerts. Dining out for lunch and dinner happens often too. Usually, a resident gets to pick their favorite restaurant and they rotate different options! A night out on the town is great for seniors as they get to interact with one another while remaining physically and mentally active.
Adult Family Care Homes are another type of senior living community that offers lovely activities for their residents to enjoy during the holidays. Just take a look at Serenity Adult Family Care Home! Although the home is in a residential neighborhood, the care provided is similar to an assisted living facility as three meals a day are given as well as trips to scenic boat tours and outings to holiday events. Some families prefer a smaller environment for their loved one because of how familiar and cozy they feel. Most adult family care homes have about 5 residents to socialize with and get to know one another, like a family. It is all about preference and both styles of senior living communities have wonderful benefits for seniors.
Community Goals
Keeping their residents active and busy during the holidays is what senior communities ultimately strive for. Being with family is very important, but so is getting to know your neighbors from across the hall. Without the friendly staff, caregivers, and active lifestyle from the residents, these festivities would not be as successful as they currently are in the many independent living, assisted living, adult family care homes, and memory care communities.
We love visiting the clients we helped to move in and love it, even more, when we see them smile while decorating a tree or singing along to Rudolph! What activities would you like to see in a senior living community?
If you are interested in participating in these activities in a senior living community in Central Florida for yourself or loved one, please call a senior advisor today at (407) 796-1582.
