Have you ever wondered what goes on in an assisted living or what kind of activities do they provide? If you or your loved one is considering assisted living in Central Florida, socialization is a great reason to explore this option! Each year in January, the National Association of Activity Professionals recognizes the contribution of activity professionals in long term care, adult day care, senior care center and retirement living facilities. This year, Activity Professional Week falls though January 19-26 and the theme is lighting the way so what better time than now to raise awareness about what really goes on in these senior living communities!

To spread the word, North Star Senior Advisors sat down with Wayman Place, an assisted living and memory care community in Orlando, FL to film their residents during a Dance/Sing-along! We also interviewed their Activities Director, Shirley and Jesse with Perfect Dancing (password to enter website: Jesse) to learn about their day to day schedule with residents. Jessie travels to multiple assisted living communities in Central Florida to engage residents in activities related to dancing and other types of movements.

More and more assisted living facilities are getting rather creative when it comes to their activities. Not only do residents benefit from this, they get to be around people and receive socialization that otherwise they would not living home alone. It’s important to have seniors socialize as well as prevent them from feeling depressed. Many elderly residents tend to isolate themselves because they feel anxious or depressed. They may have lost a spouse, a friend, or relative and fear that they’ll lose more people. This is why many Central Florida assisted living facilities center around scheduled activities that typically include outings to events, restaurants, museums, plays, you name it! Of course, there is more than just outings, especially for those that prefer to stay inside or have limited mobility like exercise classes, games, movie nights, cooking demonstrations and more.

As Senior Advisors, we truly value the hard work Activity Directors plan for their residents. Hope you enjoy this video with Wayman place and Jessie from Perfect Dancing and happy Activities Professional Week from the North Star Senior Advisors team!
